First of all, it's a big assumption to assume he will have to be protected. But let's make that assumption for argument's sake.
That would mean:
1) that it would be all but impossible to trade him
2) but it would tip the scales to making a buyout sensible.
Right now, I am completely against a buyout. However, if he will have to be protected (again, we don't know that yet) then a buyout becomes much more compelling IMO.
Would rather have the cap hit for another year than expose another player that we don't want to expose
