Take a team like Carolina for example they have terrible centre depth in the NHL and no blue chip centre prospects. Let's say they aren't Jankowski's only choice, but are a team he'd consider going to.
Their 2nd rounder would be 41st today. They flip it to Calgary for a 5 month negiotiating window, which they have a good chance of being successful during... and if they fail, they get the 51st overall pick. It's not a huge gamble with lots of upside.
But like I said, it only works if he's not Tim Erixon and specifically wants to sign for a team like the Leafs close to where he's from or something.
I think it's moot anyway and he'll sign. But I am starting to wonder what he's waiting for... or maybe he's still sick.

Would Carolina risk losing the 41st overall pick in 2016 for the 51st OA pick in 2017? Cause that is the actuality of the compensation pick. They would lose a year of prospect development time, not only dropping down 10 spots.
Chicago wasn't able to trade the rights of Hayes for anything better than the compensation pick and there were multiple teams rumored he was considering.
The thing is once a player decides to wait it out, they will most likely just wait until all offers are in front of them.
