It's not special treatment. They've played this long without him, now you're going to bump a guy, send someone to the ECHL who may not deserve it, so you can dress this guy who abandoned everyone in a very public display? Treat him like any other prospect (which he is).
IMO, he's lucky they are even allowing him back. If it wasn't for his potential trade value, I suspect Yzerman would have told him to pound sand and stay home.
