I guess he is still a Flame. It would probably be insulting to him if they told him to stay home and wait by the phone and then they don't trade him.
"Russell, you won't be a part of this team after the deadline. Stay home and wait by the phone"
*hours later*
"Russell, you're still a Flame, get down to the dome and get ready to play."
I'd be choked if I were him, and I'm sure other players wouldn't look to favourably at that situation either. Participate in team stuff until you're not a part of the team.
