If nothing else, this buys the Flames another two years of development time. Granlund's a bubble player who will require waivers next season, and wasn't a lock to make the Flames out of camp next season.
Shinkaruk is in the same situation as Poirier, where he's already in his second year in the AHL, but because of his age when he signed his ELC, is still waiver-exempt for two more seasons.
