While some fans may not appreciate defensive defensemen, GM's love to add that type of player at the deadline. Guys like Polak and Engelland will be the type of defenseman that certain teams are going to want to add. Especially if they are scouting the Flames right now (or last year) and seeing that Engelland as a top 4 guy actually doesn't look too bad in a pinch. He's the perfect bottom pairing guy (much like Russell) because he can be great on the bottom pairing or fill in on the top four and not be exposed. Those are great depth guys to add to contenders because they help you immediately and then a lot if injuries hit.
I think Engelland gets us a 2nd rounder or more at the deadline. I think one of Russell, Engelland and Wideman is almost guaranteed to move at the deadline. Russell could get us a lot. If they re-sign him then I think Engelland still gets us a fair amount. Ideally for cap reasons we'd deal Wideman but its a tricky contract to get rid of and may happen in the offseason if at all.

I am not going to call you crazy but I believe you are way overvaluing Engelland. At $1million/year he might fetch a late round pick. With his current contract, I don't believe he gets you anything at this year's deadline. Better off dealing him next year.
I do see the guy's value but he has been healthy scratched this year.
