Right now Stamkos is a better hockey player than Monahan (his struggles after coming back from injury aside), but by the time the Flames are actually contenders in 2-3 years, Stamkos will be past his prime while Monahan will just be entering it.
Hamilton, is a top pairing D-man now on most teams, with even more potential to get better over the next 2-3 years, for a former first rounder that has had trouble cracking an NHL lineup after a few years trying (even a deep one), is ludicrous.

There are very valid reasons not to make this trade but I disagree with the bolded part. Hamilton has a ton of potential and we are starting to see it but I think as a fan base we are over rating our D. The team is what the record says they are and I no longer think we have one of the top D corps in the league,
right now. If we did, we would win more games. Hamilton is playing 5th most minutes among our defensemen last I checked. If he was good enough to be a top pairing guy right now, Hartley should be fired.
