I have the Blu-rays of the original trilogy and, for the most part, they look great. Well, except for the garbage cgi added later by Lucas. Most of the time it is distracting and completely unnecessary. A 5 second shot of the exterior of Jabbas palace? Better add a creature in the foreground doing something stupid or the audience might get bored and stop watching. That's how a lot of the prequels felt to me, just a barrage of poorly thought out cgi.

Unfortunately you're downplaying Lucas's CGI meddling. He added entire CGI dance sequences, Greedo shooting first, a young and trim Jabba, Hayden Christenson (all the other ghosts are older, but Darth is his young self), ...and Gungans into RotJ?
