I would dearly like to know the true story behind how the summer played out. From piecing together what some of the local media has said it sounds like there were a couple of things at play
- Flames were in on Talbot and Jones. Landed neither
- Flames had a deal in place for Hiller that fell through. Possible destination was San Jose which evaporated when they got Jones
So here's what I think happened
- Flames thought they could get Jones
- Intent was to run a Jones/Ortio tandem this season
- They had a deal to ship Hiller to San Jose, with no intent to sign Ramo
Then Jones got signed by San Jose which took away both their first choice to be their #1 this season AND the landing spot for Hiller.
At that point there was some panic and they signed Ramo because Hartley didn't have confidence to go into the season with Hiller/Ortio
Something like that. It went sideways for sure.

I think Ramo was signed so they would have a capable #1 if a deal for Hiller materialized during the course of the season.
Unfortunately, Hiller has looked like garbage so any teams that may have been suitors in September probably aren't now.
I agree though, I think the plan was to get one of Jones or Talbot. I think the Hiller trade falling through was the catalyst, but only with the hopes that he could be dealt part way through the season or towards the deadline for any team that got a subpar or injurious start from their starter. The irony of course is that's what happened with Calgary and Hiller.
