I wish he stuck around for it as well, but their elections take so damn long that it would just never end. I think it was about two years away when he announced he was going to quit.
And, as John Oliver said (give or take) last night, "the election is still 457 days away. There will be children born on election day whose parents haven't even met yet".
Also, his replacement starts on September 28th, so they have given him more than a year of what will hopefully be a wildly entertaining circus/election.
