They've got to do this while he's on just current contract to maximize their value. Not sure you'll get a fair return, but it'll change the entire culture on the team. Bautista loves blaming umpires and management for his issues, sometimes you wish he stop wearing his emotions on his sleeve and play baseball.
Josh Donaldson should be the clubhouse leader (if he isn't already), he cares about one thing and one thing only and thats winning. I think he could contribute a "win now" culture on the team. He never calls out the umpire, fights with opposing teams, and willingly calls out teammates when they aren't playing to the best of their ability. Both Donaldson and Bautista are great players, Donaldson just conducts himself differently then Bautista.
Just a thought, maybe move Donaldson to the number three spot and Bautista to the number 2. Donaldson is already the best player on the team and has earned the 3 role more than Bautista this season. This also could establish Donaldson as the clear leader on the team.
