I was under the impression that bonuses for trophies were written into the SPC.
If you are a finalist for one of the end-of-season awards given out by the league, you receive a bonus paid by the league of a set value depending on the award and your place in the final vote. For the major awards (Hart, Vezina, Norris, Selke, Richard), they pay a bonus to the top 5. The Byng and Calder only pay bonuses to the top 3. For the Jennings and Conn Smythe, only the winner receives a bonus.

The league-wide top 10 in the various statistical categories for each position also receive bonuses paid by the league, as do the players named to the end-of-season All Star teams.

These league-paid bonuses are outside the player's contract and don't count towards any cap calculations.

In addition to the league-paid bonuses, entry-level players can also negotiate individual bonuses for winning any of the major awards or statistical top 10 lists. These bonuses can be for any value up to $2 million each, and cannot exceed a payout of $2 million combined. The Calder and Byng trophies are not eligible for these extra bonuses on a player's contract.

These bonuses are part of a player's contract and do count against the cap if they are paid out (that is one reason the Hawks got in cap trouble after they won the Cup, Toews had a big bonus for winning the Conn Smythe Trophy).

All of these bonuses are considered "B" bonuses and are difficult for a player to achieve. There are also "A" bonuses that are easier to achieve that deal with individual performance. "A" bonuses max out at $850,000 per year, are paid by the team and count against the Cap. Johnny should have maxed out his "A" bonuses this season.

Monahan will also likely receive maximum "A" bonuses this year.
