Put me in the disappointed category.

You have a team currently sitting in a playoff spot, with their own destiny in their hands, and they got there through hard work, effort, and sacrifice.

Now the trade deadline is gone, and the team is nothing but weakened for the home stretch - a cruel twist of fate taking Giordano out of the lineup, and the self inflicted excision of Glencross. And to offset this their GM. . . . Picks a guy off of waivers.

I'm in no way advocating selling the farm for a Cinderella run, but this organization has re-stocked the prospect cupboard: Gaudreau and Mohahan on their top line, guys like Poirier, Ferland, and Granlund all looking not out of place in the NHL, and Bennett and Klimchuk in the wings.

So, when I see the Flames having 15, 45, 48, 50, 75, and 80 in the upcoming draft, it says to me that there was room to make a move to reward the guys in the room now without jeopardizing what they're trying to build.

Edit: And no one should take for granted that the progress of the rebuild will be invariably linear - that the Flames jumped from Step 1 to Step 3 in their 5 Step plan, so next year's bound to be Step 4. Lots of franchises have see promising rebuilds regress unexpectedly (see: Colorado). A chance at the playoffs this year is nothing to dismiss out of hand on the assumption they'll be right back here next season.
