I originally started with a hard 7 and was basically asked to go to this method.

I kind of like this because its more like a playoff series, and the other way I guess I look at it is if the Flames finish a series early, the additional games are better going into a new series because once the Flames take a series the addtional games can't tie a series.

It does make personal analytics a bit harder unless you go to percentages for things like gf and ga instead of the hard numbers.
