In my opinion the show is at it's best when it's a mixed pace - almost a balance between storyline build up and moving on with the plot. While Season Two was painfully slow, the one amazing benefit was the massive build up to the end of the first half of season 2 for when Sophie was found. That build up made the second half of season 2 that much better.
To me season three was such a mixed bag of good and bad. Elements of the battle with Woodbury were great, but Rick's mental dilemmas and the whole everyone is sick story arc were a bit annoying. Ever since the Prison went down and the group splintered I feel like the show has hit a different level. (To be honest I'm curious to watch the first season of the show as I think it's going to be a bit of a head trip to see the growth in the show overall.)
It's interesting that they've already polished off Gareth, given how long The Governor lingered I was half expecting him to escape this episode and continue to track the group for a few more episodes.
