Darabont hasn't been involved with the Walking Dead since season 1. Being an executive producer is a pretty non-descript title. Sometimes it means a lot and sometimes it's completely meaningless.
In lost the Showrunners were lindelof and cuse. J.J. Abrams stopped being involved in the day to day affairs in the first season.
They are often the head writer who also serves as one of the executive producers but some showrunners don't give themselves writing credits on every episode even if there are extensive re-write (Gilligan) others like Matt Weiner (Mad Men) take it on them all.
