If I were in Treliving's shoes (thank goodness for all of you I'm not!), I would make a rare exception here and offer Brodie near-unlimited term in exchange for a lowered cap hit. That's how much I like Brodie, and how confident I am in him remaining a good/great defenseman for years to come. Example:
$79.3 million total ÷ 13 years = $6.1 million AAV / cap hit
On a slightly more reasonable term, I could certainly see a 7x7 deal happening (since 7 is his number).
On a short-term contract (under 5 years), I would expect Brodie's AAV to be ≥ $ 7 million. Therefore, the following would not surprise me:
$15 million total ÷ 2 years = $7.5 million AAV / cap hit.
