Simply using visually obvious points to point out something like "who scored a goal" shouldn't be controversial. Better than trying to bury your head in the sand trying to ignore racial differences.

It seems really out of place. Especially when there are other identifying factors that would have easily pointed out Subban.
If they were to point out "Henrik Sedin (Swede in the middle)" or "Henrik Sedin (guy with red beard in the middle)" would that really help someone looking at the picture? Both would be visually obvious points as he is both Swedish and has a red beard.
The usual standard in identifying players in photo's would be to mention a number. Subban wears 67 and even though part of his jersey is obscured, you could see clearly see he was the only person wearing anything with a 7 on it in the picture. To caption "Jordan Subban (67)", would have been sufficient in this case.
