As for retrieving possessions from a premise you have vacated, did you ever have a lease, or bills in your name mailed to that address?
I've had situations like this happen in the past to several friends, and if you can prove you lived there, and prove the possessions are yours, if needed, the police will escort you to the premise, and stand by while you collect your items. Obviously it's not ideal, and can strain a relationship further, but if the ex landlord/friend, is basically stealing from you, how much more strained can it get? Otherwise, small claims, which is a big waste of time, because you're going to have to provide more proof to them about ownership of the belongings, then you would the police.
