I'm curious because any sport that I watched, and played, the trailing team usually finds that extra gear. Heck at times I've seen Calgary play like a team possessed trying to tie up a game... Always made me think, "why didn't they play like this the whole game?"

The problem is EA has never figured out how to improve the AI to make smarter decisions in these final moments. Instead of making the AI smarter they compensate by just boosting the players and nerfing your goalie so that a last-gasp shots goes in, even if it's a backhander from the point.
Besides this isn't real life athletes, it's a computer simulation so the "final push" isn't the same. Why shouldn't the leading team get a boost also in the final minute as they "push" to seal the deal? In real life, it's usually both teams that turn it up near the end.
A lot of top online players will purposely not dress a 5-star lineup in HUT online because of ice tilt. It's easier to win with a weaker lineup.
That's wrong.
