What a bizarre thing to take offense to.
It's not an elitist term at all. It is more a term for a guy that loves cars, and takes a large amount of pride in his vehicle. I have nothing special. I have a VW Tiguan I lease through work, and an '08 BMW 135i worth maybe 25k. You could be a car guy, and own a 87 Ford Tempo. It's more about your attitude towards your cars, and how you care for them.
I baby my stuff, and have aneurisms over rock chips, dings, and worry more about what I put in my cars than my own body. I enjoy the 2-3 hours I spend each weekend cleaning wheels, waxing, and detailing my stuff. I am currently having a massive amount of emotional anxiety, because the shift knob leather in my BMW has some unusual wear on it, and I cannot fathom the idea of a not perfect shiny knob.
