I think that's exactly what he is. Filler for a year. Still gives him the chance to impress the Flames or other NHL clubs that he is a fit for them. On a team that had size throughout the lineup he could fit in easily. With a team that is more puffster than truculent it's a little tougher to put him into the lineup.
But he has a shot and he has earned it so it's up to him to make the most of the opportunity.
