A lot of it has to do with his qualifying offer which I think is 3m minimum which is fairly high for how he played. Also there was no room in Nashville for him with webber jones josi and Ellis. He was a stud in new York until he became torts whipping boy, and new York moved him to lower the cap hit.
3 years ago he was better then Brodie has ever been, is 24 has top pairing upside, and was top 4 on an eastern conference final team. Not to mention he was half a point a game d man in the shortened season.
I do think there are some issues ( just a guess I have no inside info) but I would assume they relate to work ethic, and partying.
Having said that if the leadership in your room is strong (gio, glencross, big ern) the flames may be able to give this kid a career revival. I would give him a 3 year 7.5-9m deal, unless there are some red flags that I do not know about.
