Turns out that I have two problems. First problem is that my fob is dead. The battery is fine but the remote is not transmitting. The components on GM fobs are so crappy. This is the third fob that has died. Second problem is that the door lock cylinder has gone bad. It has a significant amount of play and as such when the key is being turned it is not actually able to lock or unlock the door.
I think it is time for a new vehicle.
