It baffles me. Prostitution is the most exploitative, degrading work on Earth.
Despite our best efforts, it's unlikely we will ever be able to completely eliminate prostitution. It isn't called "the world's oldest profession" for nothing. Once you accept the fact that there will always be people in situations so desperate that they will sell their bodies for money, the most compassionate response is to make the sex trade as safe as possible for those who are working in it. Existing laws drive sex workers underground and promote pimping, putting prostitutes in great danger. Legalizing and regulating the industry would do much to improve safety while also making it easier for sex trade workers to gain access to support and resources that will help them escape that lifestyle if they so choose.
