I would disagree for two reasons. One, it lead the way for a control stick design on a controller. Before then it was joy/flight-sticks or bust, essentially. Sony would follow with replacing the PS1 controller with the Dual Shock after the N64 came out. Obviously the stick design wasn't great, as it wasn't very sensitive and became loose/broken pretty easily. Two, they successfully made a controller that felt pretty comfortable in using the D-Pad or the Control Stick separately. Clearly, this separated the two from functioning as a whole, but it really was nice to use the control for a sole purpose than stretching to rest on the control sticks of many other controllers up to this date.
Personally I never liked the original Xbox controller. Too big, the white and black buttons felt useless, and just overall a clunky design. The S design fixed a lot of that, and the 360 controller obviously is one of the best (minus the awful D-Pad).
