Just because they show highlights until noon the next day does not mean that viewers will tune in to watch it at other times. Just like the news there are reasons why they show certain shows at certain times.
The CBC has done extensive research as well and has big ratings for "The National" from Sunday to Friday. The CBC in the past used to end HNIC very quickly to air the National instead of show post game interviews and commentary. The CBC lost more viewers showing the news as those viewers switched to Sportsnet and TSN to watch interviews and analysis. There were many complaints because of this and the CBC subsequently changed.
