On a current radio station they get like 10 cents per play or some number. This goes out to say 10,000 or 100,000 people. So per person listing you get about .00001 cents. The rdio and other models pay roughly this amount. So what happens is the total amount of money spent is similar however there is a lot more variety being listened to and a lot less total ears listening.

But with Rdio's practice the user can "save" the music on their device thus making the music an on-demand model and removes incentive to actually buy the recording.
