I don't think you can separately disconnect the oxygen supply giving the pilots oxygen, but not the passengers. As the reason you stated, oxygen fueling the fire, was stated as a reason the pilots wouldn't have used the masks.

What if the fire started in or near the cockpit. That would make it even worse, no? If the pilots are forced out due to smoke or heat, or the electronics fail quickly...
