I've heard from bouncer friends that it used to happen quite often. Probably still does.

Not every single slight is a racist thing. Sometimes there are rules that seem stupid and unfair, but they are still rules.

Calgary is not unique in this situation, maybe it's a little worse here, but it's still fighting off that small town mentality. In my opinion, a lot of Calgary hasn't fully realised the diverse and expansive city it's become. You've still got some ignorant townfolk who express their ignorance in a variety of ways.
Sorry you have to deal with racism, that has to be awful, but try not to paint Calgary as some inherently racist city, it's not.

I'm sure racism still exists in Calgary, and if you were to go looking for it you would find it. What I think people are saying is something I see as well- as a white person many times when I have to tell somebody who isn't white something negative; the race card gets pulled.

From knowing people in the industry, it most definitely is still quite common to discriminate based on race. I've even had a bouncer flat out tell me "We don't completely keep blacks and browns out, to avoid it looking like racism, but we are told to keep their numbers down to avoid problems. Specifically if they're in groups, we'll usually deny 1 or 2 of them and that'll make the whole group move on".
Pretty ****ty, but if you guys think it doesn't happen to this day, you're dreaming.
