I'm fairly confident that the concerns about Shinkaruk at the draft—not just on the part of the Flames, but all the other teams who passed on him as well—had a lot to do with how much he regressed from his 17-year-old season to his draft year. In 2011–12 he scored 49 goals and 91 points in 66 games. Last year he scored 37 goals and 86 points in 64 games. These concerns appear to be justified, since Shinkaruk is presently not even scoring at a point/game pace. He's likely one of those players who physically matured earlier than his peers, and then plateaued at an young age.
