For the same reason the NBA won't show the balls, the NHL won't either. The NBA draft lottery is now an event based almost entirely on the perception its going to be rigged. People watch to see how and who David Stern will rig it for, and every year there's always several teams who figure to get preferential treatment. This year could be huge for the NBA, the Lakers are going to miss the playoffs, but not badly enough to be in the top 5. So of course on lottery night everyone is going to tune in to see if the Lakers jump into the top 3 or more likely right to number 1, so they can confirm its rigged. Even if they don't jump, people will watch. No doubt the NHL would like to create a similar effect. Its all about TV as always.
