If I was being totally forthright I would have just said "I purchased it at London Drugs and they didn't have the colour I wanted" and I also wouldn't have said, "I don't have a receipt." Because I did have a receipt, it just wasn't a Canadian Tire one.

By the letter of the law, that's still return fraud (cross-store return). Maybe red and orange ones are less popular as they are plentiful and London Drugs was trying to clear inventory, thus offering discount. Canadian Tire might now have one more model in inventory that is slower to move.

That you felt kind of bad is just because you were cognizant that you were trying to pull a fast one in fooling the Canadian Tire guy into thinking that you bought it at another Canadian Tire store, had no receipt, and were doing an equal value trade.
