Like it or not, there is still a role on this team - and in this league - for a guy who plays 6 minutes a night, crashes in the corners and punches the odd face. McGrattan was always going to be replaced by someone with a similar skill set.

I get that there are a couple teams in the league that don't have a Grats in their lineup (it might only be one, Detroit?) but there are definitely ZERO teams in the league that don't have an enforcer in the lineup unless they are absolutely full of high-level talent and a few guys who can fill the role in different ways.
If Calgary had a few real bangers that had some talent, then we wouldn't likely need McDermid, but the Flames don't. McD fills a necessary role so long as Grats is out, and really, there wouldn't be much point in bringing in one of the skill guys or someone who isn't quite ready just to get trounced on the 4th line.
