They'll ideally want it at 3.0% but I'm assuming there will be some cost-benefit analysis done and if there is any kind of significant savings at 3.5 or 4% they'd probably do it. This is the elevation profile I have based on Google Earth data:
Hwy 1: 3700 feet
Old Banff: 4080 feet
Bow Trail: 4070 feet:
17 Ave: 3850 feet
Hwy 8: 3700 feet
Elevation Gain: 380 feet
I am no engineer either, but my calculations are that it would take 3.9km of trenching (all the way to Bow Trail) to gain 380 feet of elevation at 3% grade and 2.3km (up to Old Banff) at 5% grade. They have to build overpasses for both Old Banff and Bow Trail, so I am assuming they will just go with a 3% grade and trench the whole thing?
Never realized until just now that the elevation change down to Hwy 8 is just as much as coming up from Hwy 1... I hope the residents of Elbow Valley enjoy the sound of engine brakes.
