Yeah, the ranches are definitely more expensive, and in that budget, probably not realistic. But having said that, I'm not sure how a suburban-style neighborhood in Cochrane is better for you compared to any other place in NW Calgary.
You say your main reason is to be closer to the mountains..I assume to save some time. Lets say it shaves 20 minutes going to the mountains and you go there one a week....then you save 40 minutes every weekend. BUT you lose 40 minutes
every day by going back and forth to work in Calgary, compared to living in a NW neighborhood. So that's almost 200 more minutes of driving a week to be a little closer to the mountains on the weekend? And that's assuming you never go to Calgary outside of work...which I kind of doubt.
Obviously we all have different priorities though, so that might be worth it for you. I do like driving that road, ha.
