And I can't disagree with that. Given the magnitude of the transition it would appear to make sense to make it as gradual as possible and ease in his own team whilst leaning on the established team for help during the initial transition. I get that he had his own team but have a problem accepting that he couldn't at least give the old guard a chance.

This I don't agree with. I was in the don't want Mourinho to succeed Fergie camp. As good a manager as he is, he is a short term destabilising journeyman.
Knock United all you want for expenditure but the meat and potatoes of their glory days under SAF came from the academy. A byproduct of stability.
And ... it's worth mentioning that David Gill left a huge void too. Transitional times ....
