It will be interesting how the Oilers approach negotiations with Schultz. The problem for EDM is that:
(a) he’ll have arbitration rights next summer and
(b) he’ll likely post big offensive numbers whether he improves his defensive game, or not.
I wouldn't be surprised if EDM goes for a shorter term deal with Schultz before committing long term, unless they think his defensive game improves over the season. Improvements in his defensive game may not affect his price as much as other D given his offensive numbers will already likely see him make pretty big money, but may affect EDM's willingness to sign him longer term.
