I am going to get flamed here but when people talked about the Apple walled garden they are talking about the control Apple has on its users. Android appeals to the consumer who might access their consumable media and other content from various sources, many not necessarily paid. Make no mistake though Google can't take any moral high ground here because it wants to do exactly the same, except differently (google tracking and analytics)

I do find it more than a little bit humorous that you cited an article that based its conclusions on mobile cosmetics, jewelry and Hautelook, to rebut that suburban soccer mom's are becoming a bigger and bigger chunk of the iPhone demo.
