It is really just optics. The opposition will jump at any opportunity to try and get the current government to change in hopes that it will open the door for them to get another seat. They'll say that this guy participated in illegal activities so how can the voters trust him to legally and morally represent them.

The news story I heard was that he is going to sit as an independent, but that is not enough for the Wildrose. They must think they have a good chance of taking the seat in a by election.
