Niewendyk had executive experience with the Panthers, Leafs, and Team Canada. Shanahan doesn't have any more experience than that - in fact, he has no experience in the front office of an NHL team. In both cases, you're looking at a well-regarded former player with a few years of experience in minor executive roles taking a big leap to President or GM.
