My thoughts at first as well. However, they are also used in the NBA and in European soccer and the more I look at them, the more comfortable I become with them.
Also, as I have compared past NHL trades of picks, I find it is usually pretty indicative.
Also, as I said, it was for some comparison and perspective only - at the top at least, each year is a little different.
