I understand both arguments about the not going to the AHL but it makes sense in his point of view as why leave the KHL top league in russia to play in the AHL. They just get the stereotype because it is common of them but it does make sense in their best interest

Yes exactly.
Why would you choose to make like $100K instead of $3M simply to prove to your team that you are too good for a lower tier league if you know that you are too good.
It's not being selfish, it's being true to yourself. If he came to the NHL and didnt produce then you could make the argument that he isnt good enough for NHL.
That's like your employer telling you to take a low salary in order to prove yourself when you know that you are worth much more....you would never take the deal.
