Unfortunately, barring the big miracle, they cannot offer him a reasonable shot at winning the Cup within his remaining career horizon. Hence; he would leave only if
a) the real chance of winning SC is more important to him than personal/family discomfort and other nuisances of dealing with public perceptions of his leaving, or
b) if the organization doesn't want him to stay here and wish to spend their money on someone else.
I personally consider option b) unrealistic. All indications from the head office to-date have been that they want him to retire here (unless the recent Francis media "breakout" affair has been staged to get a feel of the public opinion regarding a mere potential of trading Iginla now). So, it's option a) only, I think.
We all realize that the Flames have the ability to outbid any team for his services but I would think that they have enough intellectual honesty not to overpay for a player that isn't helping them win now at 15th in the conference. Iginla at 36 simply isn't worth to the Flames what he would be to a team on the cusp of winning the cup. I'm willing to bet if other teams made offers of $7 million a season that the Flames would in fact let Iginla walk as I'm not sure if even Ken King is this foolish although anything is possible with this club.
