I said pull it off him for awhile, light a major fire under his ass and see where it goes. He needs to lead the team to the playoffs, not be part of the supporting cast. That's the captains job, no? I'm not questioning his leadership, he's one of the best leaders ever, but he needs to PLAY the way he earned the C more often than not. He needs to be our best player on the ice.

The idea of taking the C off him is meant to be motivation, to take some pressure off him, not spit in his face.

Side note, I wasn't suggesting we just turn around and give Cammalleri the C, I was simply saying out of everyone on this roster, he deserves it the most other than Iginla.
Pulling the C off of Iginla is maybe the dumbest suggestion I've heard in a while. Not because Iginla is so great and wonderful right now, but because it would accomplish nothing, but as other posters suggested, insult Iginla. But you'd see the same lack lustre results on the ice, nothing would change. This team is in need of new direction, new on ice leadership for sure, this group, that includes Iginla and his captaincy are well past their expiration date. Maybe with another cast, Iginla would once again be a great captain, but for this team it really makes no difference.

Which is why removing the captaincy does nothing. It would be like trying to fix a broken leg by putting a band aid on it, only the band aid in this case also gives the leg gangrene. Taking the C away from Iggy on this roster would dole out nothing but public humiliation for a 35 year old veteran and is nothing like the Marleau situation:

1. Marleau is a good player, but he is not Iginla caliber, mot the same thing
2. This would be occurring much later in Iginla's tenure and career than Marleau
3. There are no other viable replacements on the team. Cammy suggestion is hilarious given he seems to be just as much past expiry than Iggy is. If we had a young up and comer worthy of the honor, maybe moving it to that player makes sense, but to move it to another under performing veteran is nothing but a slap in the face.
4. It would have no effect in the room given the above. With no letter, Iggy would be still seen as the leader of this club and nothing would change except maybe resentment from the players towards the coaches and management.

A leadership change is likely needed in Calgary, but that won't and shouldn't come from the demotion of one leader for the promotion of a not ideal candidate. When a CEO of a company is fired, very rarely do they stay on in an alternate role. Instead they move out and go in a different direction. That is what is needed in Calgary, not some gimmicky change of captaincy that insults maybe the best player in franchise history.
