Boychuk didn't get very much PP time last year and obviously none this year.
Also, he is an RFA at the end of this season, so if the Flames were to claim him and he didn't work out they wouldn't be on the hook for additional years. His salary is 0.625 mil.
Interesting to consider that some of the college free agents this year are similarly sized to Boychuk, have not shown the ability to put up a PPG in the AHL, and would likely be signed to a 2 or 3 year deal. Difference being that Boychuk would have to spend the year in Calgary while college free agents would be sent to the Heat. Sending Karlsson to Chicago and opening up another contract really makes this potential claim interesting.
