That is true for some. It didn't happen as much in Canada as it did it the U.S. where whole nations were moved 100s of miles from where they lived and put onto mega-reserves, but it did happen to some on a smaller scale. There is also the fact that many native tribes were nomadic and didn't have specific land to call home; hence why the concept of land ownership was not fully understood.
There are even some First Nations people in Southern Ontario that were refugees from the States during the 1700s and early 1800s including Canadian/First Nations War of 1812 hero Tecumseh.
