Out society may give them an elevated status in some situations compared to other beasts, but no way are they part of our society. We certainly don't share customs and laws with them, which is integral to being part of a society.

Yes we do share customs with them. The term man's best friend is there for a reason. During our hunting/gathering days we fostered a relationship with dogs and came to depend on each other. Now they have transitioned into companions.
