It's not. How many KMs? What condition was the truck in? What options? What colour? Where does your friend live?

All the above contribute to how much resale value one can potentially get out of a vehicle.

The simple equation of "$40,000 truck - 3 years = $15,000" tells us absolutely bugger all, and just the AutoTrader.ca listings alone would suggest that the vehicle either
a) had high mileage;
b) was in less than average condition;
c) was a lesser trim level;
d) any combination of a, b or c;
e) had an owner who willingly sold it for below market value (for which there could be a variety of reasons).
