All the non-nerds I know that have iPhones do not upgrade to every single model they put out, I know people with 3Gs, 3GS's, and 4's. Even the nerds I know don't upgrade to every model (I have a 4, not a 4S, wasn't worth upgrading). And most nerds I know have more than 1 phone, usually an iPhone and an Android phone, plus a half dozen older phones.
You seem to be assuming that just because Apple introduces a new phone that EVERYONE that has one upgrades, then you are basing your arguments on your assumption. That's fallacious.

This is dumb, I own an iPad (which I hardly ever use, got it more for travel) and then I got a Nexus 7 and I like the size MUCH more.
So there's a good reason to get an iPad mini if you own an iPad; you prefer the form factor.
There's also a good reason to get an iPad mini vs. a Nexus 7; you have a large inventory of purchased apps/music/etc. App vendors don't let you download the "other" version of their app (they should), so if you've got a lot of money invested in one platform then moving to another could be expensive. (This isn't unique to Apple either, Amazon encrypts their eBooks).

Lots of nerds own iPhones including me. Some jailbreak them, I haven't recently because the recent releases of ios do what I used to jailbreak for.
